When I joined the fold, Bruce and Alex had already been working with Tee Templeton, who played synths and had an amazing sample library. I mostly played trumpet, but in various sessions, I would switch to keyboards or even guitar, while Tee played drums or another instrument. The four of us, Bruce, Alex, Tee, and me, made most of the music of numun for a couple of years.
We played a showcase in Alex’s loft, where I met Benny Rietveld who co-owned a studio space on Rivington Street with Tee and Mic Rains. (That’s how I eventually ended up joining Rains’ band Sputnik a few years later). We played the old Luna Lounge on Ludlow, but most of our activity consisted of making music in Alex’s apartment studio.
Eventually, Tee left the fold and recorded a solo album. Alex and Bruce started building momentum towards an album. numun played a residency at The Continental, and the album took shape with a new batch of songs that departed from much of the introspective, atmospheric work of the core quartet. — As told to Rene Edumds by Joe Drew.
